Thread veins, sometimes called spider veins, are the fine red, purple or blue veins that appear near the surface of the skin on the legs.
They’re very common, often appearing with age, hormonal changes, pregnancy or simply family tendency, and while they’re harmless, many people feel self conscious about them in shorts, skirts or swimwear.
Sclerotherapy is the established treatment for leg thread veins.
A very fine needle is used to inject a solution directly into the vein, causing its walls to close. The treated vein is then gradually and naturally absorbed by the body, while blood reroutes through the many healthy veins nearby. The treatment is minimally invasive, carried out by an experienced medical practitioner, and requires no anaesthetic.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?
It depends on how many veins are being treated and how they respond.
Some people are happy after a single session. More extensive thread veins typically need two to four sessions, spaced several weeks apart. Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate at your free consultation.
When Will I See Results?
Not immediately. In fact, treated veins often look slightly worse before they look better, sometimes appearing bruised for a week or two. The veins then fade gradually as the body absorbs them, with results developing over several weeks to a few months.
Does Sclerotherapy Hurt?
The needles used are extremely fine, and most people describe a mild stinging or cramping sensation as each vein is injected, which passes quickly.
No anaesthetic is needed and most people find the treatment very tolerable.
What Happens After Treatment
You can walk out and carry on with your day – in fact, walking is encouraged.
You may be advised to wear compression stockings for a period afterwards to support the best results, and to avoid hot baths, saunas, strenuous exercise and sun exposure on the treated area for a few days. You’ll receive full written aftercare guidance at your appointment.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Temporary bruising, redness and small raised areas at the injection sites are common and settle over days to weeks. Some people notice light brown staining along a treated vein, which usually fades over time.
Serious side effects are rare when treatment is carried out by a trained medical practitioner, and your clinician will discuss everything with you beforehand.
Can You Treat Varicose Veins
