Skin booster treatment being applied to a patient's cheek at a Tinkable clinic

Profhilo, Structura and Skin Boosters: How to Choose the Right One for Your Skin

Most patients who walk into our clinic asking for Profhilo do not actually need Profhilo. They need someone to look at their face and tell them honestly what is going on.

That is not a criticism. Skin boosters explained properly is a conversation almost no clinic has time to have. Every brand sounds similar, every website promises a glow, and the difference between Profhilo, Profhilo Structura and polynucleotides is rarely set out in language anyone can act on. So you end up choosing by price, by Instagram, or by whatever the clinic happens to stock.

This guide is the conversation we wish every patient had before booking. By the end you will know what each treatment does, who it suits, who it does not suit, and how to spot when none of them is the right answer. We have treated thousands of patients across our five Midlands clinics since 2004, and the honest answers below come from doing this work long enough to see what holds up at the six-month review and what does not.

What Skin Boosters Actually Are (and What They Are Not)

A skin booster is an injectable treatment designed to improve the underlying quality of your skin rather than reshape your face. Most are based on hyaluronic acid, a substance your body produces naturally that binds water and supports the scaffolding inside your skin. Production drops sharply from your late twenties, which is why skin starts to look flatter, drier and more crepey over time even when nothing else has changed.

The category is sometimes called bio-remodelling because the goal is to remodel your skin from the inside, not to add shape on top of it. A traditional dermal filler sits in one area and creates volume or definition. A skin booster spreads through wider zones in small deposits, integrates with your tissue, and prompts your own cells to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. You are not adding contour. You are rebuilding the foundation that contour sits on.

This distinction matters because patients regularly arrive convinced they need Profhilo when what they actually need is two millilitres of well-placed cheek filler. Others book filler when their real problem is skin quality, and they leave looking fuller without looking fresher. Getting this right saves money and avoids the slightly puffy, slightly artificial look that gives aesthetic treatments a bad name. If you are not sure which camp you are in, a complimentary consultation is the safest place to start.

Why So Many Products Now Exist

Five years ago, Profhilo was effectively alone in this category. Today you will hear about Structura, polynucleotides, exosomes and a long tail of alternative brands. Some of this is genuine innovation. Some is clever marketing of products that do broadly the same thing. The sections below cut through that and tell you which ones actually offer something different.

What Is Profhilo and Who Does It Suit

Profhilo is an injectable made from pure hyaluronic acid in an unusually high concentration, stabilised thermally rather than chemically. Once injected into five specific points on each side of the face, it spreads through the deeper layers of your skin and acts as both a slow-release hydrator and a stimulator. Over the following weeks it prompts your skin to produce its own collagen, elastin and fresh hyaluronic acid.

The pattern we see in clinic is consistent. Patients notice their skin feeling firmer and looking dewier from around week four, with the full effect peaking at around eight to ten weeks. The standard course is two treatments one month apart, with results lasting roughly six to nine months. Most patients return every six months for maintenance, and many tell us their skin looks better after the third cycle than it did after the first because each round builds on the last.

Profhilo suits you well if your concerns are dullness, dehydration, fine crepey lines on the cheeks or neck, and a general loss of that healthy lit-from-within quality. Patients in their late twenties to early forties tend to see the most dramatic improvement because there is still good collagen architecture for Profhilo to work with. Older patients still benefit, but usually as part of a combination rather than on its own. You can read more on our dedicated Profhilo treatment page.

Where Profhilo Does Not Belong

Profhilo will not lift a heavy jowl, fill a hollow cheek, or sharpen a soft jawline. We say this clearly because patients who arrive expecting structural change from a hydrator always feel let down, and that disappointment is preventable. If structural change is what you actually want, the honest conversation is about jawline filler, targeted volumising, or a collagen stimulator like Sculptra.

Profhilo Structura: The Newer Sibling Explained

Profhilo Structura was developed to address a specific gap. Original Profhilo is excellent for hydration and skin quality but does not provide the gentle structural support that many patients in their forties and beyond actually need. Structura uses a modified formulation designed to address mild laxity and early volume loss without behaving like a traditional filler.

The way to think about it is this. Profhilo sits in the dermis and works on surface quality. Structura sits deeper, closer to the bone in some areas, and provides a soft scaffold that lifts and firms without creating obvious volume. You do not look filled. You look like the version of yourself from two or three years ago. It is particularly effective in the mid-face, along the jawline, and in areas where skin has started to slacken but the underlying bone structure is still intact.

The treatment course mirrors standard Profhilo, with two sessions a month apart and maintenance every six to nine months. Many patients now combine Structura with original Profhilo, using one for deep support and the other for surface glow. Combination protocols of this kind are increasingly common in evidence-led aesthetic practice, and bodies like the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners have emphasised the importance of treatment plans tailored to individual anatomy rather than off-the-shelf packages.

Who Tends to Benefit Most from Structura

Patients in their mid-thirties to mid-fifties with early laxity, soft jowling, or a loss of definition without true volume loss are the strongest candidates. If you have heavier jowls or significant hollowing, your practitioner should be honest that Structura on its own will underwhelm you. In that situation, the better conversation is about Sculptra for collagen stimulation across the wider face, or carefully placed structural filler.

Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: A Different Mechanism Altogether

Polynucleotides have arrived in UK clinics relatively recently and they work in a genuinely different way. The active ingredient is fragments of purified DNA, usually derived from salmon or trout, which signal your skin to repair itself at a cellular level. They are not hydrators in the same sense as Profhilo. They are regenerators, and that distinction is the whole point of the treatment.

This makes polynucleotides particularly useful for thin, damaged or compromised skin. The classic example is the delicate skin under the eyes, where most fillers and boosters are either too thick or risk creating puffiness. Polynucleotides can improve texture, reduce the darkness that comes from poor microcirculation, and gradually thicken skin that has become papery with age or sun damage. We also see good results on scarring, post-acne texture and on the neck.

A typical course is three or four sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart, with results developing across two to three months. Many patients combine polynucleotides with Profhilo, using one for repair and the other for hydration. This is not upselling. The two products genuinely target different problems, and for the right patient, the combination produces a result neither could achieve alone.

How to Choose: A Practical Framework

The honest answer is that nobody should choose their own skin booster from a website, including this one. The right product depends on your age, your skin condition, your medical history, what you do for a living, and what you want to look like in two years rather than just next month. That said, here is the framework we use during consultations so you can arrive prepared.

If your main concern is dull, tired, dehydrated skin with fine crepiness, original Profhilo is usually the strongest starting point. If your main concern is soft jowling, early laxity and a loss of definition without obvious hollowing, Profhilo Structura is often the better fit. If your skin is thin, damaged, scarred or particularly compromised under the eyes, polynucleotides are designed for exactly that situation.

For patients with significant volume loss, none of these is the right primary treatment. You are looking at collagen stimulators like Sculptra or strategic filler placement instead, possibly alongside a booster as a supporting act. If you cannot place yourself confidently into one of those categories, that is exactly what a consultation is for. We would rather spend twenty minutes telling you that you do not need a treatment yet than sell you one that will not deliver.

A Word on Combining Treatments

Most patients over forty get their best results from a combination rather than a single product. A common approach in our clinics is Profhilo for surface quality, Structura for gentle support, and a small amount of well-placed filler where genuine volume is missing. The total often costs less than people expect because each component does less work, and the result ages with you rather than against you. The mistake is asking one product to do the job of three.

What to Expect: Comfort, Downtime and Safety

All three treatments use very fine needles and most patients describe the discomfort as minor rather than painful. With Profhilo and Structura, you can expect small visible bumps at each of the five injection points per side, which usually settle within twenty-four hours. Polynucleotides are delivered in tiny amounts across a wider area and produce minimal swelling. Bruising is possible with any injectable treatment, particularly around the eyes, and patients on blood thinners or certain supplements should mention this beforehand.

Most patients return to work or normal activities the same day. We recommend avoiding heavy exercise, alcohol, saunas and very hot showers for twenty-four hours, mainly to reduce the risk of bruising and to let the product settle properly. Results develop gradually over weeks, which is part of why these treatments look natural when they are done well. Nobody should walk out of the clinic looking different. You should walk out of the third-month review looking better.

Safety depends almost entirely on who is treating you, not which product is being used. All Tinkable practitioners are doctors and nurses with specialist aesthetic training, and the clinic has held the Save Face Excellence award for over ten years. We do not use beauty therapists for medical injections, and we believe this matters more than any single product choice. Independent regulation through bodies like Save Face exists precisely because the consequences of injectables going wrong are clinical, not cosmetic.

Where We Treat and How to Start

Skin booster treatments are available at all five Tinkable clinics across the Midlands. Our main clinic is at Enville, and we also have locations in Bridgnorth, Leamington Spa, Coventry and Daventry. You can request to see the same practitioner at every visit, and we recommend you do, because continuity is what allows your clinician to track subtle changes and refine the plan over time.

A Final Honest Summary

Skin boosters are one of the genuinely useful developments in modern aesthetic medicine when they are matched correctly to the patient. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable, or assuming what worked for a friend will work for you. Profhilo, Structura and polynucleotides each do something different, and the best clinics will tell you when none of them is the right answer.

If you take three things from this guide, take these. Skin boosters improve quality, not shape. The right product depends on whether your concern is hydration, laxity or repair. And the practitioner you choose matters more than the product they use.

Here is what to do next:

  1. Identify your main concern honestly, whether that is dullness, laxity, thin skin or volume loss
  2. Book a complimentary consultation so a clinician can examine your skin in person
  3. Ask the practitioner what they would do if they were in your position, not just what is on the price list
  4. Commit to the full course rather than a single session, because the second treatment is where the visible change happens

If you want to talk it through with someone honest, our team is happy to help. You can book a complimentary consultation at any of our five Midlands clinics, with no obligation and no pressure to proceed.
