How Long Does Botox Last? Anti-Wrinkle Injections Explained

Anti wrinkle injection administered by a Tinkable nurse for natural looking results

Three to four months. That’s the honest answer for most people asking how long Botox lasts, and it’s the one you rarely see stated plainly on a clinic website.

The longer answer is more useful, because three to four months is an average, and you are not an average. Your metabolism, the strength of your facial muscles, the dose used, the skill of your injector and even how often you go to the gym will all shift that number in one direction or the other. That’s why your sister might still look fresh at month five while you start to see your frown line creep back at week ten.

This guide is written by the team who treat these questions every day across our five Midlands clinics. You’ll find a clear breakdown of how long anti-wrinkle injections actually last, what they realistically treat, what to expect on the day, how to avoid the dreaded frozen look, and how to choose a clinic that won’t put your face in the wrong hands. If you’d rather just talk it through, you can book a free consultation at any of our locations. No commitment, no sales pressure.

The realistic timeline, month by month

Botox doesn’t switch off and on. It eases in and eases out, which is part of why properly done injections look so natural.

You won’t see anything for the first two to three days. Most patients notice the first softening between days four and seven, with the full effect settling by day ten to fourteen. From there, results hold steady for roughly two months, then very gradually start to fade as the muscle activity returns. By month three, you’ll typically see movement coming back. By month four, you’re usually ready for your next treatment.

There are exceptions in both directions. Regular patients who’ve had a few rounds often find each treatment lasts a little longer than the one before, because the muscle has had time to weaken between sessions. First-time patients, particularly those with very strong frown muscles, sometimes find their first round wears off faster than expected, which is exactly why we offer a complimentary review at two weeks to fine-tune the result.

Why your Botox might wear off faster than your friend’s

This is the question we hear most often after the first month, and it deserves a proper answer rather than a shrug.

Your metabolism is the biggest variable. If you’re a marathon runner, a hot yoga regular or someone who spends real time in saunas and steam rooms, your body processes Botox faster. Higher body temperature and increased circulation accelerate how quickly the product breaks down at the neuromuscular junction. None of this is a reason to change your lifestyle, but it does explain why a personal trainer and a desk-based accountant can have identical treatments and notice very different durations.

The strength of your muscles matters too. People who frown when they concentrate, squint at screens all day or are simply very expressive tend to have stronger underlying muscles. Stronger muscles need a precisely calibrated dose, and they recover their movement sooner than gentler ones. This isn’t about using more product on everyone with a deep line.

Over-dosing is what creates the heavy, frozen look most patients are trying to avoid. It’s about an injector who knows where the strong fibres sit and treats them properly.

What lifestyle factors really make a difference

Stress, sleep, sun exposure and the general condition of your skin all sit behind every treatment, even though Botox itself doesn’t touch them. The product relaxes muscles. It does not repair sun damage, restore collagen or hydrate dry skin. So if your skin is weathered and dehydrated, your lines will look deeper when the Botox wears off, and it will feel as if the results didn’t last when in reality your skin needs separate support.

This is why we often suggest pairing anti-wrinkle injections with a skin rejuvenation treatment like Profhilo or polynucleotides. Botox relaxes the muscles that fold your skin. Skin boosters improve the quality of the skin itself. Combined, the result feels more complete and tends to last longer in the way patients actually care about, which is looking refreshed when they catch their reflection in a shop window.

What anti-wrinkle injections genuinely treat

Three areas account for the vast majority of treatments we do. Forehead lines that run horizontally across the brow. The vertical glabellar lines between the eyebrows, often called the elevens or frown lines. And crow’s feet, the fine fan of lines that appears when you smile.

Beyond those, Botox has become quietly versatile in skilled hands. We soften a pebbly chin, where the mentalis muscle creates a dimpled, orange-peel texture. We lift downturned mouth corners that can make perfectly happy people look permanently sad. We relax the masseter muscle for patients who grind their teeth at night, suffer jaw tension or want a slimmer, softer face shape. And we treat hyperhidrosis, the excessive underarm sweating that has very little to do with wrinkles and quietly changes lives.

The frozen look is a choice, not a side effect

Almost every new patient brings up the same worry. They’ve seen someone with an unnaturally still forehead and they don’t want to look like that. The truth is uncomfortable for parts of the industry but worth saying clearly.

A frozen face is the result of too much product, placed too uniformly, by an injector treating every patient the same way. It is not what Botox does when used properly. Our approach is to soften the lines that bother you while preserving enough movement that you still look like yourself when you laugh, raise an eyebrow or look surprised. If anything, we’d rather under-treat slightly on day one and add a small top-up at your two-week review than send you home with too much done.

What actually happens on the day

Your first appointment runs around 30 to 40 minutes, but most of that is conversation. We sit down with you, talk through what’s bothering you, watch how your face moves naturally, check your medical history and agree a plan together. The injections themselves take around ten minutes.

The needles are very fine, finer than a standard blood test needle. Most patients describe a brief sharp scratch and nothing more.

Some feel almost nothing at all. There’s no downtime in the traditional sense. You can go straight back to work, do the school run or carry on with your day, with a few small caveats for the next few hours.

Avoid heavy exercise, saunas and lying flat for around four hours. Don’t massage or rub the treated areas, because the product needs to settle in the muscle where we placed it. Skip alcohol that evening if you can manage it, since it slightly increases the chance of light bruising. Beyond that, you can carry on as normal. There is no special cream, no expensive aftercare routine and no need to overthink it.

When you’ll start to see changes

Day three is usually the first hint. Day seven, most people see a noticeable softening. Day ten to fourteen is when the full effect settles. We book your complimentary review for around two weeks after treatment, which is the right moment to assess the result and make any small adjustments before the product has fully set.

This gradual onset is one of the reasons properly done Botox tends to look so natural. Friends and family typically comment that you look well rested or ask if you’ve been on holiday, rather than realising you’ve had anything done.

How to choose a clinic that’s genuinely safe

This matters more than almost anything else in this guide, and it’s where the UK aesthetics industry currently has a problem. Botox is a prescription-only medicine. In the UK, that means it can legally only be prescribed by a doctor, dentist or independent nurse prescriber. The injection itself should be carried out by a medically trained professional with real aesthetic experience, not a beauty therapist who’s done a weekend course in a hotel.

Look for Save Face registration, the government-backed independent regulator for cosmetic injectables. Ask who will actually be treating you, what their medical qualifications are and how long they’ve been doing this work. Ask what product they’re using and to see the box at your appointment. A good clinic will welcome those questions. The wrong clinic will dodge them.

For an authoritative independent overview of how botulinum toxin works and the safety standards behind it, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is one of the clearest medical resources online.

What sets a medical clinic apart

At Tinkable, every patient is treated by a qualified doctor or independent nurse prescriber, each with thousands of treatments behind them. Our team works across our Enville, Bridgnorth, Leamington Spa, Coventry and Daventry clinics, and we’ve held the Save Face excellence award for over ten consecutive years. You can read more about the clinicians who’ll be treating you before you book.

What it costs, and what you’re actually paying for

Honest pricing is part of how we work. You can see current treatment costs on our price list, and Klarna finance is available if you’d prefer to spread the cost.

You’ll find cheaper Botox in plenty of places. You’ll also find it for two or three times this price in central London. The difference at a proper medical clinic is the consultation time, the assessment of your facial anatomy, the experience of the person holding the needle, the quality and traceability of the product, and the complimentary review to make sure you’re happy.

Cheap injectables almost always come with one or more of those things missing. It’s not snobbery, it’s where the risk lives.

Deciding what’s right for you

Most patients tell us, looking back, that what they really wanted was permission to feel good about their decision. Anti-wrinkle injections aren’t a moral question. They’re a small, temporary medical treatment that some people find genuinely lifts their confidence, and others decide isn’t for them. Both are reasonable answers, and a good consultation should leave you feeling clearer either way.

If you’re leaning towards trying them, take your time. Compare two or three clinics if it helps. Ask about qualifications, ask about review appointments and ask to see real photos taken by the practitioner who would actually be treating you.

A simple way to approach the decision:

  1. Note the lines or areas that genuinely bother you, not the ones social media tells you should
  2. Check the clinic is Save Face registered and your injector is a medical professional
  3. Book a free consultation and ask everything on your mind, with no obligation to proceed
  4. Give yourself a few days afterwards before booking treatment

Whenever you’re ready, our team would be glad to talk it through with you. Find your nearest Tinkable clinic and book a complimentary consultation at a time that suits you.
