The light from the laser is attracted to the melanin within the hair. ( the darkness ). Once the light hits the hair the energy form changes from light to heat and results in a short bolt of heat travelling down the hair follicle to the root of the hair.

The heat damages the follicle and interferes with the growth cell,

A simple rule of thumb for laser hair removal is that 20% of the follicles treated in a single session will not produce re-growth.

Then 20% of the remaining area will be effected the next treatment and then 20% of what’s left will be effected the treatment after that and so on, until the area is clear.

This effect may in some cases be completely permanent, however due to hormones, stress, medications such as the pill etc, its impossible to say whether the effects of laser hair removal will be totally permanent.

Usually, 6 to 8 sessions of laser hair removal will be needed to clear an area with laser hair removal, but from our experience this is just a rough guide, we have experienced complete clearance in just two sessions and have patients attend treatment for 15 to 20 sessions to obtain complete clearance.

Lasers used in hair removal are normally uncomfortable, not painful, however some can be quite painful. Clinics performing these treatments will offer some form of cooling method, or icing to reduce any discomfort but expect to feel something.

Patients have referred the sensation of laser treatment to that of an elastic band being flicked against the skin and female patients have assured me its much less painful then waxing.

Laser hair removal can cause some side effects which you will be notified of and asked to consent to, they vary from extreme heat side effects, such as burning and blistering to hyper-pigmentation and hypo-pigmentation. However provided the practitioner is qualified and experienced these side effects are less occurring nowadays than in say 5 or 6 years ago.

There are also some patient influences which can effect the treatment of hair removal by laser, they are,

Patients not wearing sun block when having laser treatments, the light from the laser makes your skin more sensitive to the rays of the sun so even on dull days you must wear sun block.
Some patients find it difficult to stay away from sun beds or tanning studios when having laser hair removal which is the main cause of post laser pigmentation problems, although patients never own up to such silliness.
Waxing and other forms of hair removal between laser treatments remove the hair from the root so the next time the laser is used it has no path to the follicle,
if taking a holiday when on laser hair removal treatment, please ensure you speak to your practitioner, and leave two weeks post treatment before you arrive in the sun and wait until your tan is gone before you return for treatment.
